Reality

Reality is a word which means different things to different people. That which is real to one person, may not be real to another. And that brings us to the underlying foundation. Who, or what, qualifies reality. Who is to say what is real? Or what thing in our world of human existence makes something real. Is what is real or reality relative? In other words, can reality be defined according to the way we think about it? But then it would be relative to the way we think or to our responses toward it. And that brings us to the “it” we are calling reality. If there is reality, then what is the opposite of reality? Would we call it imaginary or unreal? Some of us have been taught that anything unseen is not real but imaginary. Of course that reasoning does not always support our attitude toward reality. For example, the law of gravity is very much in existence, but entirely unseen. Dare we say that the law of gravity is not real? The law of gravity is the force that constantly exercises a very real influence upon us. And so we could deduct that anything that has an effect upon us is reality. If reality is something that can be comprehended through any of our human senses such as seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, or touching, then what is it that is sensed through the human spirit? We are making a distinction between the physical senses just mentioned and the spiritual sensing as spoken of in the Holy Bible. It is easy to relegate reality to that which can be understood through the human physical senses. Can reality be sensed with the human spirit?

The Bible states in 1 Thessalonians 5:23 that man has a spirit, soul, and body. Here we can see in that verse, a physical component which is the body, a psychological component which is the soul, and a spiritual component which is the spirit. What do these three have to do with reality? First of all, the classifications listed above of the three elements are not meant to be definitively defined. In other words, it is my study, experiences, and research that have led me to classify the spirit, soul, and body as spiritual, psychological, and physical. Those who read this book should endeavor to do their own research to see if this is an accurate classification of the three dimensions the Bible states comprise man’s being.

The Bible speaks about truth. So is truth reality? Or is reality truth? When does reality become reality to us as humans? Does reality become truth? Can truth become reality? Are truth and reality the same? When we realize something, is that when it becomes either truth or reality within our beings or both?

Truth may not always be realized. Reality involves something registering in our beings. It is then we can say that we realize this or that. It has become a reality to us. In this sense, could we say that reality is a reflection of the truth? We are able to realize the reality by it being registered through the physical senses. So reality would only be a reflection at best of the truth. And we can see reflections, but truth can see us.
